sunset on the water in negril jamaica at citronella resortI'm lying in a hammock, being rocked by a gentle wind. A pair of sea birds dance against a robin-egg-blue sky. The tropical breeze tickles my toes. The grin on my face is the result of a satisfying Continental breakfast, and the fact that I didn't wake up with blue fingers from British Columbia weather...

Banana palms beckon me to unwind. A hummingbird takes nectar from a hibiscus flower, then disappears over a thatched roof. Volcanic cliffs lead down to a ladder that allows easy access to the sea. 50 feet below, a couple of maidens frolic in the surf.

A catamaran filled with happy vacationers passes on the deep blue sea.

Welcome to Citronella Resort on the west end of Negril.

Cove House, the cottage where my companion and I are staying, has a full kitchen with fridge and cooking unit, living room and dining room, and room enough to sleep 7. Impressionist paintings on the walls add to a feeling of serenity. This is an ideal retreat for a family. Up and down suites allow alone time, should the need arise.

Mosquito netting hangs over each bed, but my companion and I never even heard a mosquito, much less were disturbed by one. The only sound I heard was the calming roar of the ocean. And for once, thanks to warming breezes, I was able to sleep with the louvered windows open.

For the activity-minded, guide Clive offers all the water sports you might want. Or, you could take a refreshing swim in the cove below.
For those desiring more quiet pursuits, sun yourself while reading your favorite novel on your private verandah. Also, Oya is available to provide a soothing massage. She comes right to your cottage with all the needed equipment and oils. For evening entertainment, Rick's Cafe, with its famous cliff divers, is a short walk away.

Tour buses from all over the island packed the entrance. The sun sank below the horizon and set the ocean on fire. A great place to eat, listen to music and do some people watching.

Close by are street vendors offering exotic fruits and jerked chicken.

That night back at the cottage, the Negril lighthouse flashed signals into the pitch black night.

Calm your soul at Citronella.
